Notes:
Vizagapatam on the northern Coromandel Indian coast
is a natural harbour midway between Calcutta and
Madras. The British East India Company had a trading
station there from 1668. From the late 17th century a
tradition grew in Vizagapatam for the manufacture of
objects and furniture of Western form, decorated in a
distinctive manner, all being inlaid or veneered with ivory
etched with black lacquer. The decoration was drawn from
Mogul culture, adapted to appeal to western taste.

“Sedeli“ work is a very fine mosaic type inlay made up
of various coloured exotic woods, ivory and pewter.

Good mid 19th century Irish Arbutus Wood inlaid Killarney folding chess and backgammon games board.The Killarney work Arbutus folding games board with a chess side having an attractive serpentine inlaid shamrock border and the inside revealing a Backgammon Board.
Comes complete with Arbutus wood counters in a slide wood storage box and dice.
Killarney Ware was produced in Ireland from around the 1830"s. Arbutus wood was the main wood used as well as yew and holly. James Egan was one of the main manufacturers and this board can be attributed to him.
